Fossil fuels are big business and according to this infographic, the machines that are responsible for extracting resources from the Earth are some of the most powerful “creatures” in the world. These six immense machines are capable of incredible amounts of work as well as incredible amounts of pollution.

The study summarized by this visualization shows that the United States government has provided substantially greater subsidies to fossil fuel development than renewable energy. More than half of the subsidies for renewable energy went toward corn-based ethanol. (Years 2002 through 2008) Source
